Walkthrough
When the player character awakens and speaks with
Joram, he informs them that their leader
Mardaneus has gone "as crazy as a loon" and might be possessed by a demon. The player character can offer to meet with Mardaneus or put him out of his misery. If offering to meet Mardaneus, Joram directs the player character southwest to Mardaneus' house.
Upon exiting Joram's house,
Lanilor can be found walking Mardaneus home. Mardaneus insists they must be vigilant because Nemesis is near. He states he could try to rest, if only the voice in his head would fall silent.
At the entrance of Mardaneus' house, Mardaneus has a vision of Lanilor as
Thelyron Hashnitor, the demon lord of decay. He freezes Lanilor at his doorstep and locks himself in his house. Speaking with Lanilor initiates
Rescue Lanilor the Elf from his Icy Prison. It is still possible to complete Lanilor's quest and receive the quest rewards without speaking to him. Otherwise, Lanilor asks the player character to speak with Mardaneus to unfreeze him. If informing Lanilor that the front door is locked, he tells them to enter Mardaneus' house via a secret tunnel at the bottom of Aleroth well.
At the bottom of the well, there are passages sprawling out in several directions. Mardaneus' house is toward the southwest tunnel. A locked door bars the way to a ladder, but the key is on a crate next to the door. Upon entering Mardaneus' house, the player character can convince him to unfreeze Lanilor, who informs the player character about Aleroth catacombs.
The entrance to the catacombs must be unlocked. Northeast of Aleroth well, there are four dragon statues that can be rotated. Turning all statues to face north causes the centre statue to rise, revealing a path to the catacombs. Upon discovering the entrance, Lanilor rushes to the player character and offers a teleporter pyramid. This initiates
Find the Second Teleporter Pyramid.
If slaying Thelyron at the bottom of the catacombs, Mardaneus' sanity is restored. He teleports to the player character and creates a portal between the catacombs and Aleroth. He invites the player character to speak with him in town.
Quest rewards
- Mardaneus' sanity
- Variable experience which scales with player character level

Notes
- If entering Mardaneus' house via Aleroth well before Lanilor is frozen, the cutscene does not occur. In this scenario, the player character must leave Mardaneus' house, trigger the cutscene by approaching the front door, and return to his house via the well.
