Restore Mardaneus' Sanity is a Divine Divinity quest in Aleroth.

Objectives

Restore Mardaneus' sanity.
  • It seems that the healer Mardaneus may have been possessed by a demon. I must find out why this fellow behaves so strangely.
Unlock the entrance to the catacombs beneath Aleroth.
  • According to the elf, Lanilor, I must explore the catacombs beneath the village to find a cure for Mardaneus' odd behaviour. The entrance to the caverns lies near four statues. I have to move all four statues to the north in order to open the portal to the catacombs. Lanilor wanted me that evil creatures wander the caverns. I have a very bad feeling about this.
Help the dead necromancer.
  • Some friendly skeletons explained they are trying to rescue their dead master, a necromancer called Thelyron. They are using levers that are imbued with powerful magics, but something keeps going wrong. I have a feeling that if I can help them to resurrect Theylron, I may gain some information about Mardaneus.
Kill Thelyron.
  • It appears that the undead necromancer is the source of Mardaneus' obsession! He will not stop haunting the healer unless I kill him. Well, it may be a questionable task, but somebody has to do it.

Walkthrough

When the player character awakens and speaks with Template:Icon, he informs them that their leader Template:Icon has gone "as crazy as a loon" and might be possessed by a demon. The player character can offer to meet with Mardaneus or put him out of his misery. If offering to meet Mardaneus, Joram directs the player character southwest to Mardaneus' House.

Upon exiting Joram's House, Template:Icon can be found walking Mardaneus home. Mardaneus insists they must be vigilant because Nemesis is near. He states that he could try to rest, if only the voice in his head would fall silent.

At the entrance of Mardaneus' House, Mardaneus has a vision of Lanilor as Thelryon Hashnitor, the demon lord of decay. He freezes Lanilor at his doorstep and locks himself in his house. Speaking with Lanilor initiates Rescue Lanilor the Elf from his Icy Prison. It is still possible to complete Lanilor's quest and receive the quest rewards without speaking to him. Otherwise, Lanilor asks the player character to speak with Mardaneus to unfreeze him. If informing Lanilor that the door is locked, he tells them to enter Mardaneus' House via a secret tunnel at the bottom of Aleroth Well.

Several passages sprawl out at the bottom of Aleroth Well. Mardaneus' house is toward the southwest tunnel. A locked door bars the way to a ladder, but the key is on a crate next to the door. If speaking with Mardaneus, he can be convinced to unfreeze Lanilor, who informs the player character about the Aleroth Catacombs.

Notes

  • If entering Mardaneus' House via Aleroth Well before Lanilor is frozen, the cutscene does not occur and the player character is locked in the house. In this scenario, the player character must leave Mardaneus' House, trigger the cutscene by approaching the entrance, and return to Mardaneus' House via the well.
