Fane is one of six Origin characters aboard the Merryweather in Divinity: Original Sin II.
Background
Fane is an undead eternal.
Act One
The Merryweather
Initially an elf you meet onboard the Merryweather, you can talk to him sitting on a chair in the middle of the main room where you register with Magister Wiliams. In the first conversation he is entrenched in a book about religion and will inquire about your species' religions.
However, after 
Windego casts Source Blast, he is the only other sourcerer not unconscious, found on the third floor of The Merryweather. Here, he reveals himself to be an undead eternal who was only disguised as an elf using a Mask of the Shapeshifter, and that Windego has stolen the mask.
Fane can be found again after the shipwreck in a small alcove off of Fort Joy's entrance at Template:Coords. He is found in The Hidden Alcove inspecting a dead human body, attempting to obtain it's face. He had followed Windego to Fort Joy. He notes we are located in Reaper's Coast. You are able to convince him to join your party.
He notes on how to make a mask requiring a face, source orb and combining the two. Combining several single face masks along with another source orb will create a mask of the shapeshifter.

First Conversation after having him join the party.
- Ask what he thinks of your race (human) --> Think that they are the worst and are lowly --> He will say that it was almost an independent thought
- Ask about eternals --> Bite your tongue --> Ask him about the wonders --> what they looked like --> Talk about his mask and why he needs it --> Talk about interesting and inquire
