Mardaneus lives in Aleroth during the events of Divine Divinity.
'BUT NEMESIS IS NEAR! WE MUST BE VIGILENT! WE MUST BE PURE! WE MUST BEHAVE! Ooohh... What did you say, Lanilor? Rest? Yes, I could try to sleep... If only the voice in my head would be silent...'—Mardaneus, to Lanilor
Involvement
Aleroth
During the founding of Aleroth, Mardaneus and
Thelyron Hashnitor struck a deal. Thelyron does not elaborate on their negotiation, but mentions he was unsure Mardaneus would uphold his end of the bargain.
At some point, several adventurers perished in the catacombs beneath town. Mardaneus himself entered the catacombs alone but upon returning to the surface, he sealed the entrance and warned everyone of evil emanating from below.
A few days before the player character's arrival, Thelyron began to possess Mardaneus' mind, causing him to lose his sanity. Several villagers believed Mardaneus was possessed by a demon.
If slaying Thelyron, Mardaneus' sanity is restored and he begins studying how to restore connection with the Source. If requesting aid to Rivertown, Mardaneus arranges for healers to travel to Rivertown but asks the Ducal Army for an escort.
